Revolution for Dogs
Revolution for dogs is a registered brand for the drug named Selamectin. This is a topical (on the skin) medication used as insecticide and heartworm preventive in dogs.
Revolution for dogs can treat the following conditions and infestations in dogs:
-
It effectively prevents heartworm by killing the undeveloped form of heartworm (Dirofilaria Immitis). Revolution is 100% effective, even at half-doses.
-
It can kill adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis and Ctenocephalides canis), and prevent flea eggs from hatching for up to 30 days. Studies show a 99.2% success rate against C. felis and 91.8% against C. canis, for dogs.
-
It kills ear mites (Otedectis cynotis). Selamectin kills 90% of mites.
-
It kills demodectic (red) mange and sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiel or scabies). It has a 95% success rate against scabies.
-
It is effective in killing the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis), as well as to control other tick infestations in dogs.
Application And Use:
The owner needs to apply Revolution for dogs suitably, on the skin of the dog. It is suited to puppies over 6 weeks of age. Revolution for dogs is available in low-volume dosage tubes, as a solution that is non-greasy and dries quickly.
The drug builds up in the skin oils and in hair follicles. This way, it is absorbed into the body and is circulated in the bloodstream. Effects last for around 30 days, after which it needs re-application.
However, Revolution for dogs is a prescription drug. Thus, the owner may buy it from a vet, or from a drugstore, using a vet's prescription.
How It Works?
Selamectin in Revolution for dogs kills parasites, insects and some worms by interfering in their nervous systems. It does this, by affecting neuronal chloride channels in the nervous system of these parasites.
The efficacy of Selamectin derives from the fact that it belongs to a class of compounds named Avermectins. These compounds do not affect the chloride channels in the nervous system of the mammal (the dog), but they can damage the nervous system of anthropods (the parasites such as fleas and ticks). The drug causes neuromuscular paralysis in the parasites before killing them.
Side Effects:
Though Revolution for dogs is efficient in killing parasites, vets have observed certain side effects in some dogs:
-
Temporary irritation
-
Hair loss
Owners need to contact the vet, when Revolution for dogs causes slobbering, quick breathing, lack of coordination, vomiting or diarrhea in dogs.
